Dr. Rasime Erkan

An Experienced Dermatology Specialist

A 1981 graduate of Istanbul Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Rasime Erkan began her medical career at a private hospital in Istanbul. She successfully completed her specialization in dermatology at the same faculty, officially becoming a dermatology specialist in 1988. This background provided her with a strong scientific foundation in skin and hair health. Her appointment as chief physician in 1992 further demonstrated her leadership skills in addition to her clinical expertise.

Following her retirement, Dr. Erkan decided to apply her extensive knowledge and experience in a new field, joining the Hair Center of Turkey team. She now serves as the dermatology specialist, personally managing and overseeing every stage of hair transplant procedures. Dr. Erkan’s role highlights the critical importance of dermatology in hair transplantation. A hair transplant is not merely a surgical procedure; it requires a holistic approach that includes a healthy scalp and an accurate dermatological diagnosis. By managing the diagnosis and treatment of scalp conditions (such as eczema, fungal infections, and alopecia), Dr. Erkan ensures that hair follicles are transplanted into the most suitable environment, promoting healthy new hair growth.

Dr. Erkan’s expertise extends beyond hair health. She has extensive experience in diagnosing and treating various dermatological diseases, as well as in medical aesthetic and cosmetic procedures. Treatments like Botox, fillers, PRP, and mesotherapy not only address cosmetic concerns but also aim to improve overall skin health. For example, PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a scientifically validated method that uses growth factors from a patient’s own blood to support skin and hair rejuvenation. Reliable health platforms like WebMD and others often highlight the effectiveness of these treatments in dermatology.

Dr. Erkan is a proud member of the following professional associations:

  • Turkish Dermatology Association
  • Istanbul Skin and Venereal Diseases Association
  • Aesthetic and Cosmetic Dermatology Association

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure performed by a dermatologist or plastic surgeon in an office setting under local anesthesia. According to WebMD, the process involves moving hair follicles (grafts) from permanent hair-bearing areas, like the back or sides of the head, to bald or thinning areas. There are two primary methods: Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) and Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS). Sources affiliated with Harvard note that FUE, which aims to create a natural-looking and conservative hairline, is often preferred over FUSS (or the older term FUT) because it avoids the potential for a linear scar. Following the surgery, as WebMD reports, much of the transplanted hair falls out within a few weeks, but it typically begins to grow back in 3-4 months, with full results visible in 6-9 months. The World Health Organization (WHO) does not provide detailed information on specific cosmetic surgical procedures like hair transplantation on its website; instead, its content on the topic of “transplantation” focuses on the ethical and public health aspects of organ, cell, and tissue transplantation.
